Star Wars Cards

The very first card set I completed as a kid was the 1983 Topps Return of the Jedi set. I was six years old, so too young for any Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back cards. (In fact, in those days where, in my house at least, cable TV and VCRs were years away, I didn't see Empire Strikes Back until a few years later.) I also had most of the figures, lots of books, and I eventually completed the entire original run of comic books. Somehow, however, I had never picked up any original Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back cards. I mentioned that in a recent post and Fuji was kind enough to send some to me.

Two from the first series with its iconic star field background; two more with the red background of series 2.

These cover series 3, 4 and 5. Nice to have each series covered. The orange series in particular reminds me of '81 Topps baseball.

Fuji also sent some Empire Strikes back cards. As much as I love the Star Wars cards, I might love the Empire ones even more, as photos from that movie always feel a little more unfamiliar to me.

Finally, there was one Return of the Jedi card. I completed the 220 card set in 1983. However, as a youngster I didn't always take care of my stuff too well. I've got all my Star Wars cards in a box but chances are I lost some cards over the years; I've never sorted them to see what is missing. I did check to see if this card was in the box (it was).

So "Stormtrooper Attack" is available for trade if someone wants it. But also - I think I would like to put a little more effort into collecting Star Wars and Empire Strikes back sets. Looks like they go for about $0.50 to $1.00 a card in lots and a little more than that for complete sets; not too bad, but not something I think I want to spend money on at this point. There is also so much newer product out there. I actually bought a complete first series of Star Wars Galaxy around 1993 or so; I like that product with it's alternative takes on Star Wars. Too many recent cards look the same with the heavy emphasis on montages; I've seen some cool modern ones on the blogs occasionally, like this post from Johnny recently.

If anyone has Star Wars cards to trade, particularly 1977/1980 but more recent stuff too, let me know, and I might be interested in trading for them. I don't think I'm going to start buying them, but getting them in trade might be fun.

  1. I bought both Star Wars (blue and red borders only) and Empire Strikes Back cards. I had more ESB cards than any, tried to complete the whole set as I recall, but didn't. Never saw ROTJ cards until years after the movie.

I wouldn't mind getting those blue and red Star Wars cards again, but not enough to pay the prices.

  2. I searched and searched a few weeks ago for the 1980 Topps ESB set. I thought I purchased it a few years ago, but it's either buried in a box or I never actually bought it. Kinda bummed, because it's my favorite movie from the original trilogy.

  3. The recent Topps / Disney Star Wars sets are bad. No info / text on the back ruins the fun of the fronts. I was all in for the sets that were released back around the prequels.
