Mike Andrews was #2 on the Red Sox, but is holding bat #3, which belonged to teammate Dalton Jones.
Mel Stottlemyre was only ever #30 for the Yankees. His glove has the number 6. No Yankee pitcher ever wore that number; #6 at the time belonged to third baseman Charley Smith.
Bob Watson wore #26 in 1968, but is holding a #11 bat on this, his rookie card. He did wear #11 in his brief, 6-game stint with Houston in 1967. It's possible this photo was from a year earlier, or perhaps he still had #11, or at least that number on his bats, in 1968 spring training.
I really like that background on the Andrews card - baseball field in the lower left, blue sky with clouds in the upper right, it's just so nice...
ReplyDeleteKnowing the '69 set, I'd say that the odds are pretty high that Watson's photo is from 1967.
