The Kentucky Wholesale Grocers Association held their annual convention in Louisville October 6-8 1949. There's not much online about the organization, which seems to have operated from the late 19th to late 20th centuries, let alone this particular convention. While the wholesale grocers convened in Louisville, the Cold War was dominating the news in the US and Europe. East Germany became an official country with the creation of it's constitution, while the West Berlin City Assembly attempted to bring West Berlin into West Germany. In the US, President Truman signed the Mutual Defense Assistance Act, and in France, Prime Minister Henri Queuille resigned.
Of course, the biggest news was the World Series! The convention took place during Games 2, 3, and 4 of the Yankees-Dodgers showdown. In Game 2, Brooklyn evened the series at 1-1 as Preacher Roe pitched a six-hit shutout in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees regained control in Brooklyn in Game 3. With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Johnny Mize hit a two-run pinch-hit single to give the Yankees the lead. Joe Page pitched 5.2 innings of relief to get the win. In Game 4, the Yankees took an early 6-0 lead, withstanding a late Brooklyn rally to win 6-4. The Yankees would win the fifth game, and the series, the following day.
Sounds like that would've been a real "wild" convention to attend :)
