The front: Like so many Topps photos of the 60's, 70's and 80's, down the left field line at Shea Stadium. Garber's not even wearing a jersey under the jacket. As a short reliever, he probably didn't put it on until halfway through the game.
The back: Garber's long career leaves no room for a blurb.
The player: Gene Garber was a solid short reliever/closer who pitched nineteen seasons for the Pirates, Royals, Phillies and Braves. In 931 games, he went 96-113 with 218 saves and a 3.34 ERA. He appeared in three NLCS (1976, 1977 and 1982) but struggled in the postseason, with a loss in all three series and a 5.79 ERA.
The man: Garber grew up on a farm in Lancaster, PA and returned to those roots after his playing career. Active in farmland conservation, he served as chair of the Lancaster County Agricultural Preservation Board, treasurer of the Pennsylvania Emu Farmers Association and board member of the Lancaster Farmland Trust. He has also served as a spring training instructor for the Braves.
My collection: I have 36 of his cards, from 1974 to 1988. I would be interested in trading for 1983 Fleer Star Stickers #87.
That's more saves than I would have guessed.
ReplyDeleteNick over at NJWV just got that card back from Garber signed.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a Brave I got to see a lot. Loved to watch his unique sidewinder submarine style.
