1978 TCMA sets

There were two team sets from 1978. Remember how the 1979s and 1980s were in color? It's all black-and-white from here on out. I wonder if some of these guys heard "you're so old, your rookie card was in black-and-white"?

Charleston Pirates.

Steve Farr, never pitched for Pittsburgh but had a nice career as closer for the Royals and Yankees.

Doug Britt with the 1978 shades, hair and mustache.
Back before Adalberto was Junior.
I instantly loved this card when I saw it. Great name, and boy he looks like a Billy Scripture. Turns out he was even crazier than he looks here. Enjoy this 1987 Sports Illustrated article on him, calling him baseball's Paul Bunyan. "Billy Scripture: baseball manager, woodchopper, world-class trapshooter, hunting guide, champion cusser."

Daytona Beach Astros. Brought to you by Burger Chef.

The cards were less interesting in this set. Kind of an interesting background behind Leland. I also like the DB hat.

Like Jerry Seinfeld, Jorge Posada had an Uncle Leo of some prominence. A former outfielder for the KC A's, Leo Posada was a long time minor league coach in the Astro organization.

  1. Scripture wins it.
A respectable showing from Ortiz and his mitt.

  2. That Scripture card is wonderful.

So many gems in 1970s minor league cards. My favorite from this set is one I picked up a couple of years ago:

  3. Even without the B&W photos... one look at these and there is no doubt they're from the 70's. Those Pirates look like they could be in Blue Oyster Cult or Fleetwood Mac.

  4. That Billy Scripture article was fantastic. Thanks for sharing the link. I still think the Doug Britt card is my favorite of the bunch, though.
