The card, in brief: The set was sorted by team (division, then alpha by city, so Cincinnati follows Atlanta), making this the first Reds card in the set. The Braves hired a new manager during the offseason (Dave Bristol) so there was no manager card for them, making this also the first manager card in the set.
Playing career, in brief: Sparky Anderson played in 152 major league games, all of them in 1959 for the Phillies. He hit .218 with 0 HR and 34 RBI.
Post-playing career, in brief: Anderson had a Hall of Fame career as a manager. In 27 seasons for the Reds and Tigers he went 2194-1834, winning five pennants and three World Series. After his 1995 retirement he was involved in a variety of charitable endeavors. He died in 2010.
My collection: I still need both Topps cards from his playing days, 1959 #338 and 1960 #34.
My favorite era of managers was the 80's... and Sparky played a big part of that along with guys like Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, Dick Williams, and Tommy Lasorda. Although I was rooting against him when he managed the Tigers to their World Series title in 1984.
ReplyDeleteHe had some good players on those teams over the years.
