1986 Sportflics Decade Greats Ted Williams

The player: Arguably the greatest hitter who ever lived, Williams played in 2,292 games in the major leagues between 1939 and 1960, losing three seasons to World War II and parts of two to the Korean War. He was a lifetime .344 hitter with 521 HR and 1,839 RBI. His .482 OBP is first all-time. He won four RBI titles, four HR titles, six hit titles, and six batting titles, including 1941 when he became the last person to hit .400 (.406). He walked almost three times more than he struck out (2021/709).

The man: Williams was arguably the most prominent baseball star to serve in the military, most notably for flying 39 combat missions during the Korean War. After his career he managed the Washington Senators, and after their move, the Texas Rangers, and raised millions for the Jimmy Fund. He died in 2001.

My collection: I do not have any playing-days cards of Ted Williams. His last Topps card as an active player was 1958 Topps #1.

  1. It's amazing to think what his career numbers could have looked like had he not missed time due to military service..
