In 1955 Topps went with a horizontal design for it's baseball release, mostly repeating the elements of it's vertical baseball set the previous year (solid background, large portrait, small action pose). The team logo is fairly prominent in the upper right corner, and name, position and team are along the bottom.
Topps released a college football set in 1955 that had some similar elements - horizontal orientation, large logo in upper corner, person info on the bottom. The action photography made for a much more dynamic card, though.
Topps put out a hockey set that year as well. It is horizontal and features only one photo, but is otherwise remarkably similar to the baseball design.
Topps released one other set in 1955. "Rails and Sails" featured prominent trains and boats from history and modern times. I had never heard of it until I came across this particular card online this week. I was quite surprised Topps had issued a card of a Long Island Rail Road train. I'd enjoy having one but don't want to spend the $10 it seems to go for online. Would be up for a trade if anyone happens to have a copy. Like the other sets it features a logo pretty prominently in a corner. (The LIRR had a pretty bland logo until Dashing Dan came along in 1959.)
Wow, that rotary snow plow looks rather menacing. Cool little piece of Long Island history there!
ReplyDeleteI have about a dozen cards from the rails portion of the Rails and Sails set, but don't have this one. If I did, it would be on it's way north right now :)
