Wood vs. Wood #194

Last time there was a 4-4 tie. Will there be a winner this time? Two Angels pitchers today, who won a combined 234 games, 152 for the Angels.

Dean Chance gets a nice photo on his rookie card. Chance would end up third in Rookie-of-the-Year voting in 1962, going 14-10 with a 2.96 ERA. In 1964 he won the Cy Young Award, going 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA, leading the AL in wins and ERA. He was traded to the Twins after the 1966 season and had another 20-win season in 1967. He got hurt in 1969 and rapidly declined in effectiveness. In 1970 and 1971 he had brief stints with the Indians, Mets and Tigers, ending his career. Overall in 406 games he went 128-115 with a 2.92 ERA. After his career he owned a large carnivals and fairs operator, managed several boxers, and later founded the International Boxing Association. He died in 2015.

Kirk McCaskill delivers a pitch at Yankee Stadium. This would Sunday, May 25, 1986. McCaskill got off to a rough start, allowing five runs in the first three innings. He eventually settled down, and the Angels tied the game up in the eighth inning. However in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees got three runs on RBI hits by Willie Randolph and Don Mattingly to squeeze out an 8-5 Yankees win. The son of longtime pro hockey player Ted McCaskill, Kirk was born in Canada but grew up in the US, where Ted settled after ending his 20+ year hockey career as player-coach for the WHA's Los Angeles Sharks. Kirk McCaskill was a two-sport star at the University of Vermont, named to All-ECAC in both hockey and baseball. He was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets and California Angels, and played in the minor leagues for both organizations, even suiting up for the NHL Jets for one game. However, after the 1983-84 season he chose to focus on baseball, making his MLB debut the next year. He had his best season in 1986, going 17-10 with a 3.36 ERA. He had several more solid seasons for the Angels, and for the White Sox whom he signed with for the 1992 season. Overall in 380 games over 12 seasons he went 106-108 with a 4.12 ERA. He has since gone on to a career as a high school baseball coach, most recently at The Bishop's School in La Jolla, CA.
