New York Times July 20, 1969

High excitement! Moon landing today! Also the Senator from Massachusetts was involved in a fatal accident and waited eight hours to report it. Imagine how much bigger that would have been if it hadn't been on one of the biggest news days of the century.

This was a Sunday paper, which means several different sections including a separate sports section. Unfortunately those were not here, only the news sections. Still plenty to find interesting, like this story about the closing of some elevated subway tracks in Brooklyn.
The Public Notices are fascinating to read. What happened to Wilden and Chowshie? Will Katherine and William Keehan of Mahopac reconcile? What exactly will Coly, Rusty and Annette do at your child's party? So many unanswered questions, like a soap opera.
Lots of ads for computer programmers. It's fascinating to see the beginnings of the industry that would change so much of our lives in the decades to come. I personally find it easy to forget how important computers were in the days before the personal computer brought them into people's homes. I chose this page because of the ad for Control Data, which I know my dad worked at for a while, possibly even at this time.

  1. Hadn't heard about the Chappaquiddick incident until seeing this post. Didn't read the full story... but the delay in reporting doesn't make Kennedy look good.

  2. Despite all of the theories, I don't think at this point that we'll ever find out what really happened with that "accident".
