Wood vs. Wood #148

Last time 1962 squeaked out a 5-4 victory. Who will come out on top this time?

Wally Post strikes a follow-through pose, I don't know the location. Post was a big-time slugger but struck out a lot, leading the NL three times. By 1962 he was nearing the end of his second tour of duty with the Reds, a team for whom he had once had two 35+ HR seasons, but was now nearing the end of his effectiveness. Someone wrote Buffalo on this card, but Post only played in Buffalo in 1951. Buffalo was a Mets farm team at the time, and Post was never affiliated with them. He did play at Syracuse in 1964 before retiring. After his career he worked at a canning company. He died of cancer in 1982.

Dave Collins is in the batting cage at the old Tiger Stadium. Collins was a solid player for the Reds in the late 1970s and early 1980s, known for speed and a high average. He was a high-profile free agent bust for the Yankees in 1982, and the team compounded the disaster by throwing in future HOFer Fred McGriff when they traded Collins to Toronto after one season. Collins played for four more teams after that, and retired after the 1990 season. He has had a long coaching career since, currently on the staff at Indiana University Southeast.

  1. Batting cage Collins gets my vote.

  2. Both are good, but Dave Collins of 1987 is my winner.

  3. I've seen lots of vintage cards where someone wrote in a different team or position, but not too many where they also changed the cap logo! That alone is worth a vote for Post.
