The front: Great action photo of Almon hitting against the
Phillies at Shea Stadium. This would have to have been taken during the same
weekend as the Garry Maddox card we saw just a few cards earlier. Almon was
two-for-eight with two walks and two steals in the three losses to the
Phillies.
The back: The Brown website seems to indicate that he
graduated in 1975, a year after he was drafted.
The player: Bill Almon was selected by the Padres as the #1
overall pick of the 1974 draft. This was more because the Padres needed a
shortstop than anyone thinking he was really the best prospect in the draft.
(Big names the Padres passed on in that draft included Dale Murphy, Lance
Parrish, Willie Wilson, Rick Sutcliffe, and another shortstop, Garry
Templeton.) Almon was the regular shortstop for the Padres in 1977 but then
lost his job to the far-more-talented Ozzie Smith. Almon did stay in the major
leagues for fifteen years as a journeyman middle infielder, which would be a
respectable career for a mid-first-rounder if not an overall #1 pick. Overall,
in 1,236 games he hit .254 with 36 HR and 296 RBI.
The man: Almon is now a Vice President at Claflin, a medical
products company owned by the Almon family.
My collection: I have 33 of his cards, from 1977 to 1978. I
would be interested in trading for 1984 Mothers Cookies Oakland A’s #11.
The Almon-Smith situation is interesting as players who arrive with a good deal of fanfare (Almon) and disappear quickly due to some one better coming along fascinate me.
