Cards and vintage things: June 7, 1953

June 7, 1953 was a quiet news day. The biggest world headlines had to do with negotiations on prisoner exchanges to end the Korean War, and elections in Italy. Meanwhile, in Burlington, WI, there was a 12th anniversary open house at the Burlington Wholesale Grocery, located at the corner of Market and Pine in Burlington, WI. The business was a food wholesaler serving hotels, restaurants and other local businesses.

June 7 was a good day for the local Braves, who swept a Sunday doubleheader in Philadelphia. Sid Gordon was involved in the initial rally in both games. In the first game he hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Andy Pafko followed to make it back-to-back home runs, and Milwaukee cruised to a 6-0 victory. In the second game, the Braves were down 2-0 in the sixth. Gordon singled in that inning, helping to lead to the Braves' first run of the game; they scored three more in the seventh (home runs by George Crowe and Johnny Logan) and ended up winning 5-3.

  1. I'm currently doing a second free-trial week on Newspapers.com, and aside from a lot of talk about a possible armistice being signed to end the Korean war, there really isn't a lot of other catchy headlines for the day.
