Vintage Background: Double Butte Mountain

Moving into the 1970 set for this series. Four expansion teams provided some new spring training backgrounds for this set. The Seattle Pilots only played one major league season but they played two spring trainings (they didn't become the Milwaukee Brewers until right before the 1970 season). They had their spring training at Tempe Diablo Stadium, in the shadow of Double Butte Mountain, home of a cemetery that dates back to 1888 and is the resting place for many prominent Arizona politicians and also has a pioneer section. Tempe Diablo Stadium was later the spring home of the Mariners and now the Angels, and Double Butte can be seen on many cards from those teams from 1977 on.

  3. Great info. I wonder if that's the same mountain in the background of Jerry Bell's 1974 Topps card.
