1981 Topps Chuck Rainey

The front: Typical spring training headshot, with a light tower growing out of Rainey’s left shoulder.

The back: After beating the Toledo Mud Hens in the first round, three games to two, Rainey’s PawSox fell to the Richmond Braves in the finals, four games to two.

The player: Chuck Rainey played six seasons in the major leagues for the Red Sox, Cubs and A’s. In 141 games he went 43-35 with a 4.50 ERA.

The man: Rainey was accused but never charged in baseball’s cocaine scandals of the early 1980s. He appears to have gone into the construction business after his baseball career.

My collection: I have 12 of his cards, from 1980 to 1985. I would be interested in trading for 1982 Brigham’s Coca-Cola #15.
