Equipment: 1983 Topps

The two-picture layout of 1983 Topps made finding photos big enough to read the writing on equipment difficult. 1984 will be a grind too. With not much content, I'll start off with the most prominent example of the frustratingly small size of the photos.

This is probably the most iconic card in the set.

But what is written on Tony Gwynn's hat? You would think others have asked this question already, but I couldn't find anything in a brief Google search. Any ideas?
I only found one other card of interest in the base set. Dusty Baker is wearing #12, but his bat appears to be the #6 of teammate Steve Garvey.
Unlike 1984 I do have the Traded set which provides a little more "content", like the "BURG" glove for Tom Burgmeier.
Unfortunately the sun is shining on the helmet on the bat rack, but the one visible bat knob appears to be the #9 of Graig Nettles.

  1. never noticed baker using garvey's bat on that card - awesome!
and i think gywnn's hat just says "GWYNN". i found a similar black and white version of the photo on getty images - https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/tony-gwynn-of-the-san-diego-padres-poses-for-a-portrait-news-photo/961971960?adppopup=true
i zoomed in and i think the last "N" in "GWYNN" is pretty clear

  3. I always think it's funny that the photo on the card people say is the most iconic from the set is mostly just of some guy's butt.
