Meanwhile, the 62nd U.S. Open golf championship was held at the Oakmont Country Club, near Pittsburgh. 22-year-old Jack Nicklaus defeated Arnold Palmer in a playoff that marked the beginning of their rivalry.
In other Pittsburgh sports news, the Pirates beat the Cubs at home on the 14th, then lost in Milwaukee on the 15th and 16th. Bill Virdon was one of the better hitters for the Pirates those days, with four hits, at least one each game, with three of them being doubles.
I don't really watch golf, but I'd actually love to see that playoff between those two legends.
