1981 Topps Tom Underwood

The front: Great action shot in front of a packed house at Yankee Stadium.

The back: In a 2000 interview, Underwood said of Lemon, “He must have been something like 11 of 13 off me and the very first pitch I ever threw to him, he hit about 450 feet straight over the centerfield wall.” Actually, Lemon hit only .400 (10-for-25) with one home run against Underwood. Lemon did go 7-for-10 against Underwood in 1978 and 1979 with three doubles and the home run, but Underwood held him to three singles in 18 at-bats after, including an 0-for-3 in 1980. By comparison, Bobby Grich went 13-for-33 (.433) with 4 HR against Underwood, and Dave Kingman was 7-for-12 (.583) with 3 HR against him.

The player: Underwood pitched for six teams over his 11 year career, reaching double figures in victories four times. Overall in 379 games he went 86-87 with a 3.89 ERA.

The man: After his career he became a financial advisor. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2010.

My collection: I have 22 of his cards, from 1975 to 1985. I would be interested in trading for 1983 Fleer Stamps #NNO.
