The front: The hat is already off, and the batting glove is
coming off too.
The back: Speier hit for the cycle the day that his manager,Charlie Fox, yelled at him in the clubhouse because of his poor hitting. Steve
Rogers interceded and Fox hit him in the face. Though the Expos won that night,
the team lost their next seven games, and Fox was fired at the end of the
season.
The player: Fox yelled at Speier for letting his batting
average dip down to .243. He lasted nineteen years in the major leagues,
hitting .246 with 112 HR and 720 RBI. The 1970s and 1980s were a good time to
be a weak-hitting middle infielder.
The man: Speier had a long career as a coach, most recently
as the Nationals’ bench coach in 2017.
My collection: I have 44 of his cards, from 1972 to 1990. I
would be interested in trading for 1976 SSPC #105.
