1981 Topps Benny Ayala

The front: The batting helmets in the background lift this up from what would otherwise be an ordinary shot.

The back: At the time Ayala was the only Met to homer in their first major league at-bat. Since then Mike Fitzgerald (1983), Kazuo Matsui (2004) and Mike Jacobs (2005) have done so.

The player: Benny Ayala started his major league career with a bang, hitting a home run in his first major league at bat. He totaled 38 home runs in his ten year career, and hit .429 in two World Series with the Orioles.

The man: He is now a youth coach in Puerto Rico. He shared some baseball card stories with this blog in 2009 that you can find in these two posts.

My collection: I have 15 of his cards, from 1975 to 1985. I would be interested in trading for 1985 Cleveland Indians Polaroid #12.
