Hobbies are golf and racquetball: Braves pitchers had a
regular foursome that included at various times Avery, John Smoltz, Tom
Glavine, Denny Neagle and Kevin Millwood.
Favorite sports announcer is Don Sutton: The Hall-of-Fame
pitcher was part of the Braves’ broadcast team during Avery’s career.
Favorite player as a kid was Kirk Gibson: Avery grew up a
Tigers fan in Michigan.
Most prized possessions are his two NL Championship rings:
Avery was one of several Braves interviewed about their NL Championship rings
by the New York Times before the 1995
World Series. "I don't wear any jewelry," he said. "I probably
wouldn't wear a World Series ring either. I'd want to keep that one nice."
Avery would win a World Series ring that season.
Pet peeve is toothpaste in the sink: I wonder what Avery
thought of his teammate David Justice, who hit the home run that won that 1995
World Series, and kept that home run ball in his bathroom next to the toothpaste.
Where he is now: Avery most recently appeared in the Legends of the South game at Riley Park, home of the Yankees’ Class-A team the
Charleston RiverDogs, on June 9.
