1981 Topps Alfredo Griffin

The front: Griffin looks pensive, almost sad. I don't know the location.

The back: Griffin came in as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning with the Indians down 12-3 to the Brewers. They were down 14-4 by the time Griffin hit in the top of the seventh. He singled off Gary Beare to load the bases with nobody out, but Gary "Beared" down to retire the next three batters without allowing a run.

The player: A good-fielding shortstop with a pretty good bat Griffin was a speedy baserunner who was known for sometimes making bad decisions on the bases. He led the AL in triples in 1980 and hit over 20 doubles seven times. He played on the winning side in three World Series (1988, 1992, 1993). His career ended as he stood on deck when Joe Carter hit the home run to win the 1993 World Series.

The man: Griffin was a long-time coach for the Angels but now appears to be retired.

My collection: I have 68 of his cards, from 1979 to 1994. I would be interested in trading for 1988 Sportflics #156.

  1. He was one of the featured players in a Sports Illustrated article on players born in the Dominican Republic.

  2. A bit of Alfredo Griffin history is that he's the only person to be on the losing team of 3 perfect games.

1981 Blue Jays were perfected against Len Barker & the Indians.

1988 Dodgers were perfected against Tom Browning & the Reds.

1990 Dodgers were perfected against Dennis Martinez & the Expos.

Plus he was a Co-Winner of the 1979 Rookie of the Year Award tying John Castro of the Minnesota Twins.

  3. I can't think of a much better way to end your career than having the best view of a historic World Series moment.
