A San Diego sportswriter named Jack Murphy (brother of legendary Mets announcer Bob Murphy) was the key figure in San Diego building a stadium and attracting a major league team. The stadium was known as San Diego Stadium until Murphy died in 1980, and the stadium was re-named after him.
If we see MLB games this year, no doubt this is what they will look like . . .

I had no idea who Jack Murphy was, or why the stadium was named after him. I have seen this card before though. No wonder they almost moved to DC the next year!
ReplyDeleteI may be wrong about this, but the moment I saw this card I was certain it was Candlestick Park in San Francisco, where I spent a large chunk of my youth. It was often empty, as well. I wrote about this card here: https://cardhemorrhage.blogspot.com/2020/04/fred-norman-bachelor.html
