The front: One of the most dynamic action shots in the set,
though cropping the bat out of the photo is a bit weird. This is Yankee
Stadium, which would make the photo from May 18, 1980, when Texas beat the
Yankees 5-4. Wills was one-for-four with an RBI.
The back: On the night Bump made history by facing his dad’s
team, he lead of the game with a single and came around to score. He later
reached on an error and scored again. However, an error by Bump lead to two
runs in the sixth, and Maury’s team would end up winning the game 7-6 in eleven
innings.
The player: Bump Wills was a solid but unspectacular second
baseman who played six seasons for the Rangers and one for the Cubs. In 831
games, he hit .266 with 36 HR, 302 RBI and 196 SB.
The man: A long-time youth coach. He now manages the
independent minor league team Royse City Griffins.
My collection: I have 13 of his cards, from 1977 to 1983. I
would be interested in trading for 1982 Fleer Stamps #175.
