The front: Washington was known for always having a
toothpick in his mouth. You can kind of see it, practically head-on to the
camera, in the corner of his mouth.
The back: Washington had home runs from both sides of the
plate in that game against Oakland.
The player: Washington was known for his speed and defense,
though he struggled at the plate.
The man: Washington, whose real first name is U.L. (not
initials), has been a minor league hitting coach for the Red Sox since 2003.
My collection: I have 24 of his cards, from 1978 to 1986. I
would be interested in trading for 1986 O-Pee-Chee #113.
U.L.! The first ex-major leaguer I ever interviewed. And my favorite card of him.
