The front: On the road in spring training, some big puffy
clouds behind him. Can’t quite make out the signs on the outfield wall.
The back: September 24, 1978 was Darwin’s first major league
start, and first win. He struck out seven Mariners in six innings, allowing three
runs on eight hits.
The player: Darwin was just setting out on a 21-year major
league career that was split pretty evenly between starting and relief, often
in the same season. He played for eight teams, having the most success with the
two Texas teams.
The man: Darwin got into so many brawls and fights, often
coming out the winner, that teammate Nolan Ryan nicknamed him “Dr. Death”. He
is currently the Reds’ pitching coach.
My collection: I have 83 of his cards, from 1979 to 1995. I
would be interested in trading for 1990 Sportflics #83.
