The front: Simple head shot at Shea Stadium.
The back: 1980 was a pretty weak year for rookies. Of the
Topps Rookie All Stars that year, only Oester, Damaso Garcia and Lonnie Smith
went on to long careers.
The player: Oester was the Reds’ starting 2B from 1980 to
1986, a solid glove with a decent bat (.265 lifetime hitter) which was typical
enough for the time. He hung on as a backup and pinch hitter after that, long
enough to win a World Series ring in 1990, his last season.
The man: Oester was a coach for many years but now appears
to be retired.
My collection: I have 44 of his cards, from 1979 to 1991. I
would be interested in trading for 1987 Donruss Opening Day #195.
