Player Profile: Rich Amaral

I have 23 cards of Rich Amaral. This one is from 1992 Line Drive.

Playing career: Rich Amaral was a 31-year old rookie for the 1993 Mariners, finished fifth in the Rookie-of-the-Year voting, and stayed in the major leagues until he was 38. A utility man for the Mariners and Orioles, he hit .276 and had 112 stolen bases.

My memories: I had forgotten until I was looking him up that Amaral was the guy who filled in for Ken Griffey Jr. when he was injured in 1995. I guess I’ve blocked out anything relating to those darn 1995 Mariners.

Where he is now: Runs the Rich Amaral Baseball Camp in Huntington Beach, CA.

Google Autocomplete results: He is second when you type Rich Am, between Rich Americans, referring to the top 1-2% of Americans by income, and Rich Amons, owner of Capital Wireless in DC. There do not appear to be any other prominent Rich Amarals.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Ruben Amaro.
