Player Profile: Tony Alvarez

I have one card of Tony Alvarez, from 2003 Bowman Futures Game.

Playing career: Tony Alvarez, an outfielder, briefly appeared in the major leagues for the Pirates in 2002 and 2004. He stayed in the minors until 2006.

Interesting stories: In 2005, while still a professional baseball player, he married former Miss Venezuela Mariangel Ruiz. In 2009, with Alvarez’s baseball career over and Ruiz’s acting career taking off, the couple divorced.

Where he is now: Don’t know where he is since his baseball career and famous marriage ended.

My memories: Had not heard of him before getting his baseball card.

Google Autocomplete results: He is fourth when you type Tony Alv, between Tony Alva Skateboards, a skateboard company in Oceanside, CA, and Tony Alvarado, New York City Schools Chancellor in 1983 and 1984. When you google Tony Alvarez, the first three results are not the ballplayer but a California real estate investor and a Chicago singer.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Wilson Alvarez.
