Player Profile: Tavo Alvarez

I have six cards of Tavo Alvarez. This one is from 1994 Collectors Choice.

Playing career: Tavo Alvarez pitched parts of two seasons for the Expos, going 3-6 with a 5.40 ERA in 1995 and 1996.

Where he is now: Coach for Oaxaca in the Mexican League.

My memories: Only know him from his baseball card.

Interesting stories: As a high school star in 1990 Sports Illustrated wrote a long article about him, and a controversy over whether he was an illegal player on his high school team. The article notes that when he joined the team he was a skinny 160-pounder who could do only two push-ups. By the time he made the major leagues, his biggest problem, ironically, was his weight; he struggled to keep it down his whole career and is listed as 245 pounds on baseball-reference.

Google Autocomplete results: He is first when you type Tavo A, before Tavo and the Flat Black Thrillers, a rockabilly band. There do not appear to be any other prominent Tavo Alvarezes.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Tony Alvarez.
