Wood vs. Wood #300

Last time was a 5-2 win for '62. Who will win here?

I'm fortunate enough to have card #300 for 1962, a big hero number for Topps, creating this titanic matchup. (If I had #200 the Mantle v. Rose would have been right up there.)

Willie Mays looks happy as he poses with his bat before a game in Candlestick Park.

Reggie Jackson takes a mighty cut at the site of his greatest triumphs, at Yankee Stadium. (They sure could use Mr. October now!) Reggie went 1-for-6 with 2 walks in 2 day games in the Bronx in '86.

Two of the greatest players in baseball history hardly need a writeup. As someone who started following baseball long after Mays's career, and at the very end of Jackson's career, my images of them are that Jackson was a mighty slugger, while Mays was an all-around great athlete, a 5-tool player. And yet Mays hit almost 100 home runs more than Jackson! Amazing.

  1. OK wow, this is tough. Going with Reggie for this one, only because of the full body shot with that swing of his.

  2. Reggie is objectively the better photo, but his Angels cards underwhelm me. I'll still give slight edge to '87.

  3. 1987. I think it's a generational/good vibe thing for me. When I see Reggie in that Angels uniform, I think of The Naked Gun film he was in, Leslie Nielsen, and Enrico Palazzo. Hard to top that.

  4. Hate voting against Mays... but Jackson has the better photo and it's not even close. 87.

  5. '87 classic swing & great photo for a card! Obviously, would trade 100 '87's for a '62 ....but going with 1987 for the head to head wood match-up

  6. OK, maybe as a Mets fan I'm biased, but to me even with the creasing on the '62 it's a very easy call for Mays. I think it's a better photo and IT'S WILLIE MAYS!

  7. Tough one. '87 may be the better overall photo, but Mays is one of the top 5 players of all time. I vote for Mays.
