Wood vs. Wood #301

Last time we had a close battle in Mays vs. Reggie, with the 1987 action shot prevailing, 7-5. Who will win this matchup?

Many fans might recognize the name Galen Cisco as a grizzled old pitching coach, so it's surprising to see him as a fresh-faced rookie here, wearing his Red Sox cap in enemy territory (Yankee Stadium). Cisco would be sent to the Mets near the end of the '62 season, and he was a Mets starter for the next three years, racking up large loss totals despite decent peripheral numbers. He also had brief stints as a reliever for the Red Sox in '67 (not in the WS) and the Royals in '69. Overall in 192 games (78 starts) he went 25-56 with a 4.56 ERA. He then had a very long career as a pitching coach; his 25 years as an MLB pitching coach were a record, later broken by Leo Mazzone. He won two WS rings as the Blue Jays' pitching coach in '92 and '93. He retired after the 2000 seasons, and at age 89 still lives in his hometown of St. Mary's, OH. He threw out the first ball at a collegiate summer ball league game earlier this year.

Luis Aquino poses in spring training on his rookie card. Aquino pitched in just seven games as a Blue Jay before being traded to the Royals. Aquino had several solid seasons as a swingman for Kansas City. After a rocky 1992 campaign he was sold to the expansion Marlins. He had a nice bounceback season in 1993, finishing second on the team in WAR, but was unable to replicate that success with the Marlins in 1994, or in brief stints with the Giants and Expos in 1995. Overall in 222 games (69 starts) he went 31-32 with a 3.68 ERA. He seems to have kept a very low profile after his playing career - anyone know what he is doing these days?

  1. Maybe if Cisco was showing more of his uniform I'd pick that, but the classic Jays uni on the '87 wins.

  2. I'll go with the Cisco, mostly because it's a 1962 card of a 1962 Met even if he's not shown as one.

  3. Neither of these cards really call out to me... but I did notice Yankee Stadium in the background on the Cisco card... so I guess I'll go with him. 62T.

  4. I gotta vote for the Red Sox guy, right? Besides, with the Jays in the ALCS, it seems fitting to pick the guy from their last World Series victories.
