The card, in brief: Nice look at the Shea Stadium scoreboard. The logo was changeable; there would be a Yankees logo for Yankee games, though it appears to have been blank for Jets and Giants games.
The player, in brief: Darrell Evans was a slugging third baseman who starred for the Braves, Giants and Tigers in his 21-year career. The AL home run king in 1985, Evans hit 414 home runs. Unlike many other sluggers from his era, Evans had an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio (1,605-1,410). However, this was offset by his consistently low batting averages (.248 lifetime).
Post-career, in brief: Evans has coached professional baseball in the US, Canada and New Zealand. He also gives private instruction.
My collection: I have 69 of his cards, from 1970 to 1990. I would be interested in trading for 1975 Hostess #3.
Remember him well.
ReplyDeleteGot to see Evans play a lot back in the late 70's and early 80's at Candlestick.
ReplyDeleteThere's a surprising number of bloggers (current and retired) who collect him. He sounds like he would've been fun to watch, so maybe that's why so many are drawn to him.
