Vintage backgrounds: Connie Mack Stadium

1970 was the final year for Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Deron Johnson's card has a great angle with the large black wall in center field.
Another angle can be seen with Lee May holding on the baserunner Ron Stone. The "PO 100" in the background is a dog food ad - ALPO, 100% Meat.
You can see the full ad in this photo from Ballparks of Baseball. Alpo was originally manufactured in Allentown, PA - the brand name is an abbreviation of Allen Products.

  1. I've wondered for a few years now what that was behind Deron Johnson... thanks for solving the mystery!

  2. That wall looks so dark and dull behind Johnson, but now I'm fascinated by it. This post makes me want to read more about Connie Mack Stadium. Thanks for sharing!
