Player Profile: Porfirio Altamirano

I have two cards of Porfirio Altamirano. This one is from 1983 Topps.

Playing Career: A star in his native Nicaragua, Porfirio Altamirano had some success in the US, going 7-4 with 2 saves and a 4.03 ERA in 65 relief appearances for the Phillies and Cubs between 1982 and 1984, before a rotator cuff injury ended his career.

Where he is now: He is a Jehovah’s Witness who teaches Bible in Esteli, Nicaragua.

My memories: He is from before my time. Great name, though.

Google Autocomplete results: He is fourth when you type Porfirio A, between Porfirio Avila, a high-profile gang member arrested in Los Angeles in 2006, and Porfirio Alvarez, an aquaculture scientist in Mexico. There do not appear to be any other prominent Porfirio Altamiranos.

Coming up next: The next profile will be John Alva.
