Jeff Montgomery on baseball cards

Jeff Montgomery pitched thirteen seasons in the major leagues for Cincinnati and Kansas City. The American League saves leader in 1993 and a three-time All-Star, his 304 career saves rank 20th all-time. Now a Royals broadcaster and the Vice President, Internet and New Media at Union Broadcasting, which runs WHB 810 in Kansas City, he kindly answered my questions about baseball cards.

"I'll always remember seeing my first card. Was after my call up with the Reds. Made me feel like I had arrived. Also, one of my first Reds cards has Cincinnati misspelled on my jersey. The game the card photo was taken in was my only career start against the Dodgers."

Thanks! Here is an article from the LA Times about his start, noting that he "couldn't buy a vowel--or much offensive support from his teammates".

  1. Nice to know that the Washington Nationals aren't the only team that has been plagued by uniform irregularities. :)
