Player Profile: Eric Anthony

I have 49 cards of Eric Anthony. This one is from 1991 Ultra.

Playing career: An outfielder with pop and not much else, Eric Anthony played for the Astros, Mariners, Reds, Rockies and Dodgers from 1989 to 1997. His best season was 1992, when he hit 19 HR and drove in 80 runs despite hitting .239 for the Astros.

Interesting stories: Anthony was a high school dropout who was working at an assembly line at a plastics company when he was signed by the Astros after impressing at a tryout camp.

My memories: Only knew him from his baseball cards – no personal memories.

Where he is now: Coaching at Charlie Hayes’s Big League Baseball Academy in Houston.

Google Autocomplete results: He is third when you type Eric Ant, between Eric Anthamatten, a PhD candidate in philosophy at the New School, and Eric Antanitus, a photographer in Hawaii. Another prominent Eric Anthony is a graphic designer in California.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Greg Anthony.

  1. Has anyone ever figured out what's so Ultra about those cards? I'd certainly like to know.
