Great baseball card story from Shane Loux

Shane Loux has been pitching professionally since 1997, including parts of four seasons in the majors with the Tigers and Angels. He kindly shared this great baseball card story.

"There is an interesting card out there for Josh Hamilton's home run off me in Texas in 2009. It shows him swinging and makes a reference to the "471 foot monster blast". On the bottom it says he hit the home run off of me. I guess it's better than nothing. Funny story about that card: I was playing in Round Rock, Texas with the Astros AAA team in 2010 and we sign for kids and collectors right outside the clubhouse there. One day a kid asked me to sign this particular card, I didn't even know it existed. I was making fun of the card and myself to my friend and teammate, Andy Van Hekken as we walked on to the dugout. About two weeks later, I came out to sign and about 10 little kids all asked me to sign this particular card at once. When Andy and I walked to the dugout that day, I vented a little about all the kids poking fun at me for being Hamilton's "little b**ch" on the card. Well, come to find out, Andy had purchased the lot of cards off eBay and had passed out the cards to the kids and told them to all come at me at once to see what my reaction would be. Safe to say that he got the best of me.

I used to collect cards when I was little, and recently found a couple thousand in a closet full of stuff I got from when my parents moved out of state. Its neat to see some old cards of now famous players or of coaches I've had throughout the years."

Thanks!

  1. Fantastic story. This is the type of story that, despite steroids and crazy money, makes me realize baseball is still king in my book.
