Last year I did a wallet card post on the last remaining piece of the Polo Grounds. While there are no longer any pieces of Ebbets Field in it's original location, one part of the ballpark can still be found in Brooklyn. When the stadium was demolished in 1960, the flagpole was donated to a VFW Post, which later became a casket factory. In 2012, when the Barclays Center, home to NBA and WNBA teams, was built, the building's owner acquired the flagpole and installed it in front of the arena, which is next door to the Brooklyn LIRR terminal.
Here is the plaque on the monument underneath the pole.

Pretty cool. I like seeing so many things like this in your posts that I would have no clue about otherwise. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteVery cool piece of history. Glad someone had the hindsight to keep that flagpole around.
ReplyDeletethat's really great! i saw a trash can from the metrodome in a sandwich shop earlier in the summer. it's not the same.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to say that this the most (and probably the only) interesting thing about the Barclays Center.
