Cards and vintage things: June 6-10, 1962

Wednesday through Sunday, June 6-10, 1962, was a fairly slow news week. President Kennedy announced across-the-board tax cuts, there was some unrest in Franco's Spain, and Marilyn Monroe was fired by Twentieth Century Fox for repeatedly failing to show up to work. The most important event to occur was in secret - the Soviet Union approved a secret plan to set up nuclear missiles in Cuba, an action that would lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis later that year.

Meanwhile, the city of Glendale, California was hosting its annual Days of the Verdugos festival. This annual event started in 1947 as a celebration of the city's Spanish heritage and continued into the early 2000s, with highlights including hobby, outdoor and aquatic shows, a parade, and a carnival.

The Dodgers were out of town during the festival, but the Angels were in the middle of a successful homestand. The second-year expansion franchise won five of the six games during the festival, including a Sunday doubleheader sweep of the KC A's. Leon Wagner had nine hits in 17 at-bats during those six games, including a double, triple and home run. His sixth inning single in the second game of the doubleheader broke a 5-5 tie for an eventual 6-5 Angels win.

  1. Fox really did Marilyn wrong, of course so did pretty much everyone else in her life. She needed help, but was living in the wrong time to get the proper care for her particular problems.

  2. That festival sounds fun. Kinda sad to hear that they don't do it anymore.
