Player Profile: Dewon Brazelton

I have five cards of Dewon Brazelton. This one is from 2003 Donruss Team Heroes.

Playing career: Dewon Brazelton was one of the biggest draft busts of the 21st century. He was the third overall pick in the 2001 draft, by Tampa Bay, mostly because of one excellent year at Middle Tennessee State. Despite mostly mediocre minor league numbers, the Rays rushed him to the majors in 2002, and he was mostly awful over the next four seasons. Overall, in 63 games he went 8-25 with a 6.38 ERA.

Interesting facts: Brazelton’s on-field difficulties were undoubtedly impacted by his off-field issues. The product of a very rough childhood, Brazelton had a nasty custody battle with his girlfriend that led him to leave the Rays for three weeks in 2005. After his playing career, he was arrested for battery domestic violence in 2011.

Where he is now: Owns ML Baseball Training in St. Petersburg, FL.

My memories: I remember him being a highly-regarded prospect, who of course did not pan out that way at all. Hadn’t realized just how bad he was.

Google Autocomplete results: He is second when you type Dewon, between Dewgong, a Pokemon character, and Dawon Gore, a St. Louis police officer indicted for brutality. There do not appear to be any other prominent Dewon Brazeltons.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Yhency Brazoban.
