Player Profile: John Baker

I have one card of John Baker, from 2008 Multi-Ad Albuquerque Isotopes.

Playing career: John Baker was the backup catcher for the Marlins in 2008 and 2009, posting decent offseason numbers. Injuries reduced him to just 39 games combined in 2010 and 2011.

Where he is now: He was traded to the Padres this off-season and is now their backup catcher. In 54 games he is hitting .237 with 0 HR and 11 RBI. He last played on August 28, going 0-for-3 in a loss to the Braves.

Interesting facts: He is one of baseball’s most charitable players. For his work on behalf of American troops and Haitian earthquake victims, he was nominated for the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award. You can read more about his efforts at his blog [which has not been updated for two years.]

His blogger profile notes that his favorite movies include the original Star Wars trilogy; his favorite music includes Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, and his favorite books are Animal Farm, Farenheit 451 and Slaughter House Five.

Google Autocomplete results: He is first when you type John Bak, ahead of John Baker Musher, referring to an Iditarod dog musher. Another prominent John Baker was a British musician.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Scott Baker.
