1981 Topps Ken Griffey

The front: Simple headshot of Griffey in the Reds dugout.

The back: In 1973 at Indianapolis Griffey hit .327 with 10 HR, 58 RBI and 43 SB.

The player: A 3-time all-star, Ken Griffey was a key member of the Big Red Machine, and also spent time with the Yankees, Braves and Mariners. In 19 seasons he hit .296 with 152 HR, 859 RBI and 200 SB.

The man: Best known as the father of Hall-of-Famer Ken Griffey Jr., Ken Sr. grew up without a father. Buddy Griffey, a high-school teammate of Stan Musial in Donora, PA, left the family when Ken was two. When Ken Sr. found out his girlfriend was pregnant shortly before graduating high school in 1969, he married his girlfriend and made sure to be a key figure in his children's lives. Ken Sr. was a Reds coach for many years but appears to now be retired.

My collection: I have 70 of his cards, from 1974 to 1992. I would be interested in trading for 1983 Fleer Star Stickers #46.

  2. Ken is/was a good dude, probably why Junior turned out so well.
