The front: Really nice photo from a Cactus League spring
training game against the Giants.
The back: Outfielder Jim Veryzer played in the Tigers
organization in 1971 and 1972, hitting .202 with 3 HR and 23 RBI in 79 games.
The player: Verzyer was a good fielding shortstop with a mediocre
bat. He was traded to his hometown Mets after the 1981 season, then spent two
years with the Cubs.
The man: A native of East Islip, he returned home to Long
Island after his baseball career where he taught high school and coached for
many years. By all accounts he was a respected and loved member of the Islip
community. He passed away in 2014.
My collection: I have 14 of his cards, from 1978 to 1985. I
would be interested in trading for 1975 Topps #623, 1976 Topps #432 and 1977
Topps #145.
