In the 1930s Rex Cole was a household name in New York due to his showrooms around the city featuring General Electric refrigerators, still a very new technology at the time. At its peak in 1931, Cole's organization employed over 1,000 people. The business went bankrupt in 1935, but some signs from his former showrooms still remain, including this one at Second Avenue and West Fifth Street.
