1981 Topps Checklist #1

The front: Not a lot you can do with these. So how about something fun – what is the best right column/left column duo on each side? There are no hall-of-famers until card #100, so the beginning of the set is quite weak. I’d probably go with Davey Lopes, the biggest star on the front, paired with Danny Darwin, who had a very long career.

The back: Two hall-of-famers on the back, but one is paired with a prospects card, and the other is with Mario Mendoza. The best duo, where both players had long, successful careers, appears to be Reggie Smith and Mike Scott, who were at opposite ends of their careers at this point.

  1. I like the polar opposites of the Mendoza line himself against the last(at that time) triple crown man. OR Butch Wynegr and Jim Sundberg, both pretty decent catchers with decade plus careers.
