Cards and vintage stuff: July 17-21, 1939

The world was moving closer to war in mid-July, 1939, with displays of military might and political aggression by the Japanese, Germans, Italians and British. Despite these storm clouds, President Roosevelt was unable to convince senators to revise America's neutrality policy, with most of his political opponents convinced war would not occur.

Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, 15,000 Lions clubs members met for their International Convention in Pittsburgh. Attorney Alexander Wells, from Jackson Heights, Queens, was elected President for the 1939-40 term.

While Pittsburgh was hosting the Lions, the city's Pirates were on the road, splitting two games in Philadelphia and then sweeping the Giants at the Polo Grounds. Veteran slugger Chuck Klein, nearing the end of his Hall-of-Fame career, hit four home runs over the five games. The last one was the most dramatic; on July 21, with the Pirates trailing the Giants 3-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth, Klein belted a three-run home run off of Cliff Melton to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead, and Bill Swift came on in the ninth to close it out.
