Vintage backgrounds: 1964 Topps Ray Sadecki

Ray Sadecki's 1964 Topps card is well-known for the bad word in the background. Ever wonder what the ad was actually for?

I did a little sleuthing. Thanks to this project I recognized the wall as the right field wall of Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. I looked for photos of the wall and found this one in 1964 (taken by George Rodenbaugh - see this article). You may have to click on the photo to see it in greater detail.

General Copper & Brass was an industrial manufacturer in the Philadelphia area that operated for several decades before being sold in the early 1990s. Catcher Joe Astroth, who caught for the A's in both Philadelphia and Kansas City, worked as a sales professional and plant superintendent for them after his retirement from baseball.

  1. I wasn't familiar with this particular card, or it's history, but it was to fun learn about it, and see what the actual ad was for.
