Two great signs sit side-by-side in a small park in Greenwich village.
Avignone Pharmacy was located at 281 Sixth Avenue from 1929 to 2015. The CH2 phone exchange indicated that this sign was painted over fifty years ago.
Next to the Avignone sign is one for Hygrade meats. Hygrade, the manufacturer of Ball Park Franks, was acquired by the Sara Lee Corporation in 1989. The company even put out a couple of minor league baseball card sets, one in 1957 and one in 1982.
You may notice in both pictures the remains of another sign, with the letters ANK visible. Historian Walter Grutchfield unearthed this photo from 1932 showing the original sign for the Frank Avignone Pharmacy.

Look at how much empty real estate there is in that 1932 photo.
ReplyDeleteIt's so great that these signs have survived, and they still look pretty good considering their age.
