New York Times July 26, 1969

The astronauts are quickly losing cover space to Ted Kennedy, who is seeking the advice of voters on whether to quit. Of course, he did not quite, staying in office until he died almost exactly 40 years later.

A peek at some of the fashions of 1969, including an ad for a men's store named Schlesinger's, taking advantage of the space craze. "NO MAN (Earthling or spacenik) IS HARD TO FIT AT SCHLESINGER'S." Too bad "spacenik" never caught on.
I found this article interesting, living pretty near the original Levittown. I used to buy cards at the flea market there all the time. All of the good vendors are long gone though.
Back to having the sports section! Nice action sequence of Chico Ruiz. Too bad newspapers don't do that anymore. JC Martin and Joe Pepitone were the hitting heroes for the NY teams in their wins.
The head of the Long Island Rail Road did in fact get fired shortly after. In the TV listings, on Get Smart the Chief of CONTROL is involved in an apparent love triangle with a Greek spy and Agent 99's mother.

  1. Ted's constituents would've been much better off had he left in '69. And spacenik is a wonderful term, too wonderful to have stuck around.
